Seed Your Future

About the project

Seed Your Future, a movement dedicated to promoting horticulture and encouraging careers working with plants, aims to build a world where everyone understands and values the vital role of plants. In collaboration with their team, I developed three hands-on DIY activity videos, along with supporting materials, to make learning about plants fun and accessible.

Project details

In 2018, Seed Your Future launched their inaugural campaign, BLOOM!, aimed at increasing awareness and interest in horticulture careers among middle school students, parents, teachers, and school counselors. Following the success of this campaign, they initiated a second campaign, Spring 2020 Lead Generation, to continue promoting the field and engaging more students.

Overview

Client: Seed Your Future
Design Agency: FleishmanHillard D.C.
Date: Jun 2020 - Aug 2020
Role: Lead Graphic Designer

Objectives

  • To create engaging educational content that inspires middle school students to explore careers in horticulture.

  • To provide teachers and students with accessible, hands-on activities that demonstrate the relevance and excitement of working with plants.

  • To increase awareness of horticulture through targeted online campaigns.

Classroom activities videos

Brainstorm content ideas

The project began with an initial meeting between the client, the creative director, and myself to review the project's goals, timeline, budget, and other requirements. During this meeting, we discussed the educational focus and target audience—middle-school students—and aligned on the campaign's objectives to inspire curiosity about plants and horticulture careers.

Following the discussion, I collaborated with the creative director to develop and pitch three distinct concepts for the classroom activity videos:

Light Maze: A hands-on experiment to teach students about phototropism, an evolutionary adaptation that allows plants to move toward light to optimize photosynthesis.

Hydroponic Planting: A lesson on growing plants without soil, highlighting how hydroponic techniques can be used to cultivate crops in desolate areas or regions with poor soil conditions.

Plant-Based Dyes: An activity focused on making natural dyes from plants, teaching students about sustainable alternatives for fabric coloring.

Storyboarding

Once the classroom activity concepts were approved, I started storyboarding the videos. I created detailed storyboards for each of the three activities, mapping out the visual flow, key moments, and step-by-step instructions. My focus was on making sure the videos would be clear, engaging, and easy for middle-school students to understand and follow.

Video production

With the storyboards finalized, I moved on to producing the videos. I filmed all three activities using my iPhone, coordinating the setup in the back office space while utilizing items from my kitchen to enhance the visuals. It was truly a fun process!

Instruction sheets

After finalizing the videos, I focused on creating printed instruction sheets to accompany each activity. These sheets were designed to provide clear, concise guidance for teachers and students, outlining the materials needed, step-by-step instructions, and learning objectives for each classroom DIY project.

Signup and Thank You Pages

To promote the program on the Seed Your Future website, I designed a signup page. After participants completed their registration, they were directed to a Thank You page. This page provided immediate access to the three classroom activity videos for free.

Social media ad campaign

Wrap up the project

In the final phase of the project, I designed a social media ad campaign to promote the Seed Your Future program, focusing primarily on Facebook. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the program and drive traffic to the signup page.
